Verified painters and decorators, bidding for your job
Decorating is the trade where the difference between a good job and a poor one is almost entirely in the preparation, which is the part you never see. Reviews from people who actually paid through the platform are worth more here than any brochure.
What painters and decorators typically charge
Indicative UK ranges for a typical job, to help you sense check a quote. They are not a price from Mazdurr: the real number comes from trades bidding on your actual job.
| Job | Typical range | What moves the price |
|---|---|---|
| Paint a standard bedroom | £250 to £450 | Walls, ceiling and woodwork. Two coats, materials included. |
| Paint a whole three bedroom house inside | £2,000 to £4,000 | Depends heavily on the condition of the existing surfaces. |
| Wallpaper a feature wall | £100 to £250 | Labour only. Paper is usually supplied by you. |
| Exterior painting, three bedroom semi | £1,800 to £3,500 | Includes preparation and access equipment. |
| Paint kitchen cabinets | £600 to £1,400 | Proper degreasing and priming is what makes this last. |
| Repair and skim a damaged wall | £150 to £400 | Before any decoration is applied. |
Ranges reflect labour in most of the UK and exclude VAT where the trade is not registered. London and the South East usually sit at the top of each band. Materials are included only where stated.

Common questions
The things people ask before booking a painter and decorator.
How much does it cost to paint a room in the UK?
A standard bedroom, walls, ceiling and woodwork in two coats with materials included, typically costs £250 to £450 and takes one to two days. Rooms with high ceilings, heavy filling or dark colours needing extra coats push it higher.
How long should I allow for decorating a whole house?
For a three bedroom house, allow one and a half to three weeks for a full interior repaint, longer if walls need significant filling or the woodwork is being stripped. Beware of anyone promising a whole house in a few days, because the time is almost always taken out of the preparation.
Should I supply the paint myself?
Either works. Decorators often get trade prices you cannot, but supplying it yourself gives you full control over the brand and finish. Whichever you choose, agree it explicitly before work starts so it does not surface as an extra later.
What preparation should be included?
At minimum: filling holes and cracks, sanding, caulking gaps, and priming bare or repaired areas. Ask each bidder to state what preparation their price covers. On Mazdurr you can see this in the bid text and compare directly, which is usually where a suspiciously cheap quote gives itself away.
