How much does it cost to rewire a house in the UK?
A full rewire of a typical three bedroom house runs about £4,000 to £7,500 and takes two to three weeks. A one bedroom flat is nearer £2,500 to £4,000. The figure moves a lot with floor access, whether walls are chased or surface trunking is used, and whether making good the plaster and decoration is included. Do electricians have to be registered?
For notifiable work in England and Wales, which covers consumer units, new circuits and most work in bathrooms and kitchens, the electrician must either be registered with a competent person scheme such as NICEIC or NAPIT, or the work must be notified to building control separately. Mazdurr checks scheme registration before an electrician can bid.
What is an EICR and do I need one?
An Electrical Installation Condition Report inspects the fixed wiring and grades any faults. Landlords in England must have one at least every five years and give a copy to tenants. Homeowners are not required to have one, but it is worth doing on any property over about 25 years old or when buying.
How long does a fuse board replacement take?
Usually a single day, with the power off for most of it. The electrician must test every circuit afterwards and issue a certificate, so allow for that rather than expecting them to leave the moment the board is on the wall.
